All Hallow’s Eve is just around the corner and we’re here to remind you of Halloween baby names inspired by movies, literature, or simple history. We believe that some of them are very cute, and some of them will just make your hair curl…

JACK

What would Halloween be without a jack-o’-lantern? From the original term of will-o’-the-wisp (meaning Will-of-the-torch and dating back to the English folklore of 17th century), the jack-o’-lantern carving is believed to come from Ireland and was originally from turnips and beets, as opposed to today’s pumpkins. Jack as a name is a medieval diminutive of John, ultimately derived from Hebrew and meaning “God is merciful”.

SABRINA

The 1996 sit-com Sabrina the Teenage Witch popularized this originally Welsh name through the character of Sabrina Spellman. The very first time, however, Sabrina the Teenage Witch appeared as the main character of the Archie Comics comic book in 1962. The name Sabrina itself is derived from the name of the River Severn in Wales.

FREDDY

The main antagonist from Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy Krueger went down in history as a burnt serial killer, with a glove with razors to kill the victims in their sleep. The name Freddy itself is a diminutive of Frederick, originally from Germanic languages and it means “calm monarch”.

BUFFY

Known to the audience as one of the most famous vampire slayers in history, not many people know that Buffy is actually a diminutive Elizabeth (from a child’s pronunciation of the final syllable), ultimately derived from Hebrew and meaning “promise of God”.

HARRY

On the day of magic, wizards, spooks and goblins, the character of Harry Potter must not be missed. As a medieval form of Henry, it originates in Germanic languages and means “ruler of the house”.

ODA

As typical ghost feast as Halloween is, who wouldn’t remember the charlatan medium of Oda Mae Brown from the 1990 romantic fantasy thriller The Ghost, portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg? The name Oda itself originates in Germanic languages and as a variant of Odelia, it means “riches”.

EDWARD

Whether the main character of the Twilight Saga Edward Cullen, or Johnny Depp’s Edward Scissorhands, this name has always held an aristocratic tradition. Originally from Old English, it means “wealthy guard”.

CARRIE

One of the scariest female characters in the history of literature and film, Carrie was originally the main protagonist of Stephen King’s 1974 novel of the same name. Various film and TV adaptations followed. In the novel, the full name of Carrie is Carrietta, whereas in general, Carrie would be a diminutive of Caroline, ultimately derived from Germanic languages and meaning “free woman”.

ICHABOD

Originally from Washington Irving’s short horror story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane is a character based on an actual US Army colonel during the War of 1812. Sleepy Hollow is a town haunted by ghosts and the Headless Horseman in particular. Derived from Hebrew, the name Ichabod itself means “glory gone”, and the story is now presented on Fox’s TV series Sleepy Hollow.

CLARICE

The character of the intrepid FBI trainee Clarice Starling first appeared interviewing Dr. Hannibal Lecter in Thomas Harris’s 1988 novel The Silence of the Lambs. Later on she was portrayed by Jodie Foster in the 1991 thriller film. As a medieval diminutive of Clara, Clarice originates in Latin and means “bright and clear”.
